When I was 22 I began recording my first album with my dear friend and mentor Bobby Scumaci. At the time his studio was in his basement in Burr Ridge, Illinois. Recording can be repetitive and it’s important to take brain breaks once in a while so we would un-glue ourselves from the studio chairs and head up stairs. Being the gentleman that Bobby is, he would motion for me to walk ahead of him. I was usually so excited and talkative that I would walk forward while looking back to talk. One day he finally said
“𝕁, 𝕪𝕠𝕦’𝕧𝕖 𝕘𝕠𝕥 𝕥𝕠 𝕝𝕠𝕠𝕜 𝕒𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕕 𝕨𝕙𝕚𝕝𝕖 𝕪𝕠𝕦’𝕣𝕖 𝕨𝕒𝕝𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕘. 𝕐𝕠𝕦’𝕣𝕖 𝕘𝕠𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕥𝕠 𝕣𝕦𝕟 𝕪𝕠𝕦𝕣𝕤𝕖𝕝𝕗 𝕚𝕟𝕥𝕠 𝕤𝕠𝕞𝕖𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕘𝕖𝕥 𝕙𝕦𝕣𝕥 𝕓𝕪 𝕝𝕠𝕠𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕓𝕒𝕔𝕜”
Obviously he meant this literally but it stuck with me on all levels.
It’s not easy leaving things, people or situations behind us. I would not be being honest with you if I told you that I never look back. It’s natural, we all do it....but if we can reset our sights on looking forward we will accomplish so much more + we won’t run the risk of running into something and getting hurt ⚠️
Here’s to looking forward 👉while we walk this journey. Sometimes the friends who love us might have to remind us to not look back. That’s me. I’m the friend who loves you. I’ll remind you if you promise to remind me.
